The Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) published, on January 25th, the normative acts resulting from the review and consolidation of the rules referring to trademarks, industrial designs and geographical indications, as a result of the provisions of Decree No. 10.139/2019.

The work of the Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications Department of the BPTO resulted in the consolidation of current provisions of various normative acts into a few of them, eliminating obsolete acts and increasing the clarity of the rules.

They were consolidated in only three new acts. One should keep in, mind that INPI is the Portuguese acronym of as BPTO, but in portuguese:

  • INPI/PR Ordinance No. 4, of January 12, 2022, regarding the consolidation of geographical indications;
  • INPI/PR Ordinance No. 7, of January 14, 2022, regarding the consolidation of industrial designs; and
  • INPI/PR Ordinance No. 8, of January 17, 2022, regarding the consolidation of trademarks.

The new acts were published in the Industrial Property Magazine (RPI) No. 2664, on January 25, 2022, as well as in the Federal Official Gazette on the same date. They will come into effect on February 1st, 2022.
